The main ornamental feature of the Venetian gondola – the stern ferro – evolved gradually, just like the boat itself did. It originated as a simple metal reinforcement before becoming a way of showing the financial standing of its owner, and its peculiar shape was interpreted in the last century to reflect the glorification of Venice itself. The timeline shows the most significant steps of its transformation through history.
With the exception of the first two, the reconstructions are based on iconography from the period; the other illustrations proposed reproduce real preserved examples.
